What is Pilates?
Pilates is a mind-body physical fitness exercise system that evolved from the early 20th century principles of Joseph Pilates. When practiced consistently and with precision, Pilates has been seen to dramatically transform the way your body looks, feels and performs. It is an accessible way to build strength in your core muscles for better posture, balance and flexibility.
What is the difference between Pilates and Yoga?
Both Yoga and Pilates are mind-body disciplines intended on deepening the connection between mind and body through a concentration on breath and movement. There are many differences, but one of note to the beginner – is that in Yoga, the poses are often held for several breaths and the focus is on building strength and flexibility by deepening the pose. In Pilates the movement itself is connected to breath in a continuous flow concentrating on strengthening the core abdominal muscles and back. How is working with the equipment different from a mat class?
The Pilates equipment, depending on the exercise being performed, can add either resistance or assistance to the movement through the use of springs. This enhances mat exercises and expands on the variety and difficulty of the repertoire.
Is Pilates a weight loss program?
Pilates is a strength conditioning workout with a focus on postural awareness. Building muscle tone can assist in weight loss when combined with diet and cardio.
How many times a week should I practice Pilates?
When starting out, we recommend that you come in at least twice a week so that your body retains the new information learned during your Pilates sessions.
What should I wear?
For your Pilates session wear comfortable workout clothes that aren’t too baggy so that your instructor can monitor your body alignment. Socks are required on the equipment – ideally non-skid grip socks.
How do I purchase a gift certificate at Bodies by Pilates
You can purchase a gift certificate using our mindbody online store and choosing gift card. You may first need to create a log in for yourself if you don’t have one already, and you also may need to log out of the mindbody site if you use it for another studio.
